A meeting place for Ocean State Artists

Well, after a lifetime of painting in Acrylics, I finally made the leap into oils. Here is my latest piece:

Any criticism or comments would be appreciated, as I am new to oils, and am eager to get better. It has been quite different than Acrylics, but I'm enjoying the challenge, and results!

Certainly much better than any of my experiences with oil paints! An excellent start.

Thanks Krzysztof! I have been a slave to my acrylics for way too long. I'm loving the oils!

Oils are a total sensuous way to work. Keep in mind that Acrylics are really, 85% Elmers Glue(medium) and 15% color and oils are more or less, the reverse-15% oil resin anhd 85% color. Also, if you want a faster drying time try mixing in Galkyd. It's sort of the resin used in Alkyd paints which are a chalkier cousin to oils.

My suggestion is just go to town with the oils. Work small if you feel a bit daunted by them because it's better to mess up a small canvas than a larger one. In fact, work as fast and smaller at first, as you can. This will give you confidence. But what I see looks pretty good from here!
