About Me:
Melanie's work has been described as an exploration into the female psyche. Her work primarily deals with the concepts of identity. Identity can be something such as one's gender role, or their role as a figure in society. Furthermore, identity can be a role chosen, a role imposed by socialization, or by narrow-mindedness. These identities start when we are young, "what will you be when you grow up?" Or "you will be a __ when you grow up." We incorporate these identities into fairytales or we see them in the role models that we follow—they shape us into the people that we are or yet to become.

Melanie's work is also a reflection of herself. Her work is not only what she sees and feels within herself, but what she sees and feels for others. She describes her work as a visual journal.

Her imagery takes its cues from childhood imagery, surrealism, graffiti and pop culture. Its a style that doesn't seem to fit into one genre or artistic style. Its vibrant, expressionistic, personal yet universal in its concepts.

Melanie has been exhibiting her work since 2001. She holds an associates degree in fine arts from the Community College of Rhode Island and a bachelors in fine arts with a concentration in graphic design from UMASS Dartmouth. Currently she is an artist member/volunteer at Gallery X, a cooperative art gallery in New Bedford.

Melanie,
I've just enabled Blogs on the createrhodeisland.com main page, and it brought up listings of everyone who has started one, and or linked to one that they started elsewhere. Before I proceed, I couldn't tell if in your settings you intend only "friends" listed in your profile to access your blog, or it is available to access by any member. (I did read a few entries-hope that's OK-your blog isawesome!) Please let me know.
Ken
